A trip to Thailand would not complete without a visit to the
birthplace of Thailand.
Situated at the lower edge of the northern region, bordering the
Central Plains, Sukhothai was the cradle of Thailand. Sukhothai was
the first capital city, founded in the 13th century. Today, the
extensive ruins of Sukhothai, as well as those of its nearby
satellite town of Si Satchanalai, is preserved in well-kept
historical parks that have been designated as UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
At the center of Sukhothai is the magnificent remains of Wat Maha
That, which was the administrative and spiritual heart of the once
ancient Kingdom. Spreading out from Wat Maha That, over an area of
some 70 square kilometers, are the ruins of more than 20 other major
monuments attesting to the glory that was Sukhothai.
